Sonic Cruiser

BOEING is spinning-off the Project 20XX " Sonic Cruiser " and was first revealed in January (Flight International,23-29 January). Boeing has not yet designated. The proposed aircraft will fly at between Mach 0.95 and 0.98, at altitudes in excess of 45,000 ft (13,725 m) with a maximum range beyond that of the 777-200LR and -300ER. The aircraft is not going to be 747 sized. Boeing plans to move this project relatively quickly, propably be 9 to 12 months before boeing get in a position to solidify. The main focus is on the 100- to 300- seat range. The projected aircraft will be 15% to 20% faster than current aircraft, which will save time about one hour for every 3000 miles flown. Boeing will move away a standard engine wing-mounted , pylon hung engine location to tail embedded. Thrust ranges of between 40,000 lb and 80,000 lb. (178 and 356 kN) are being considered, and variants of current engines will be used.New technology on offer as part of the package is expected to include active flight controls, a high-aspect ratio supercritical wing, integrated nacelles and extensive use of composites in primary structure.
At early studies they are focused on a twin-aisle version seats , that are 225, 250-300 passengers and smaller version seating is lessthan 200 and possibly single aisle. The first study version (225 passengers) is expected to be slightly under 60 m. (200 ft) long, maximum take-off weight around 204,300 kg (450,000 lb). Cross section of fuselage is approximately between 5.03 to 6.2 m. The Sonic Cruiser is equipped with a double-delta wing which is combining with a high speed inboard section and a higher aspect ratio outboard section. The outboard section has leading and trailing edge flaps for low speed. The aircraft has twin tails, slightly canted inwards and are mounted from the wing on the inboard of the engine nacell. It will have fly-by-wire controls and B-777 style flightdeck.
An outline configuration can be determined by the first quater of 2002, full-scale development could begin either in 2003 or 2004.
Boeing Co. is shelving its proposed high-speed Sonic Cruiser passenger jet in favor of developing a more traditional but highly fuel-efficient airliner, the head of Boeing Commercial Airplanes said on Friday 20 December 2002.
