F-22 RAPTOR (Stealth Fighter Aircraft) is developped by Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Pratt&Whitney and Air Force
as a replacement for the F-15 . The stealthy F-22 will take over the air superiority role with air combat command starting in 2005 and
production will run through 2013. The F-22's primary mission is to control of the skies over any battlefield. It provides first look, first shoot,
first kill capability.
The wings of the F-22 are the so called large area clipped delta type. The wings have
large leading edge flaps, which make it efficient at low speeds and to enable it to reach extreme Angle of Attack (AOA) of over 60
degrees.
Weapon bays, The F-22 is armed with 6 AIM-120C missiles (air to air medium range
missile) . These two bays are located on the bottom of fuselage. 2 AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles are stored internally in the side of the air
intake ducts. The weapon bays are cover by doors which are closed during normal flight. When the AIM-9 missile is fired , the door opens,
an ejection mechanism is positioning the missiles outside the plane and the missile is fired. The AIM-120C missile just drops from
the plane and ignites its rocket . After firing a missile , the door close again to preserve stealth. The F-22 is also equipped with a
M61A2 internal long barrel 20 mm cannon with a 480 round magazine capacity, which is mounted above the right wing root. An
inward opening door cover to preserve the fighters stealth qualities. The F-22 has four internal bays , four external hardpoints under
the wings.
The air intake are located to the sides of the fighter's nose. They curves inward and
then upward to cover the front part of the engine which decreasing the chance of radar detection.
