| The MD-11 is the newest member of Boeing family.the airplane was launched on December 30,1986 by McDonnell Douglas.
MD-11 manufacturing based on DC-10 and manufactured by formerly Mcdonnell Douglas. First flight was on Jan. 10,1990, with first deliveried to Finnair on Dec.7,1990 and the production ended
on Feb. 2001 after announcing the phase-out of the MD-11 program on Jun 3,1998. The last MD-11 was delivered to Lufthansa Cargo on 22 February 2001. MD-11 feature a fully computerized flight deck (Glass Cockpit) and reducing the flight crew from three to two persons. MD-11 incorporated with PCA system (Propulsion Controlled Aircraft). PCA was developed by NASA to help the aircraft to fly with the loss of all hydraulic power. PCA uses the autopilot already present in the cockpit, together with the aircraft's flight control computers. PCA will increase thrust to climb and reduces thrust to descent. To turn right, the autopilot will increase the left engine thrust while decreasing the right engine thrust. Flight deck features six cathode ray tube displays. MD-11 is a long range large widebody trijet powered by three engines. The MD-11 is not just only the biggest widebody trijet ever built, but possibly be the last too. Due to advances in engine technologies, the aircrafts in production now are able to fly long distances with two engines. And another fact that MD-11 fail to meet the advertised payload and range specifications, meaning that either payload had to be reduced to get long distance flight ranges. MD-11 now faced competition long range two engines airliners which can fly long range with two engines . The additional costs involved in maintaining and operating a third engine now made the MD-11 less efficient. Md-11 still be the most economical airplane on the market for cargo version. It requires 25% less fuel per ton/kilometer than Boeing B-747-200F. Currently, a large number of passenger version of MD-11 is converting into freighters. It is expected that by 2010 all of MD-11 will be convert to freighters. | ||
