 Westland SeaKing | ||
| The SeaKing helicopter is manufactured by Westland in the UK. The SeaKing was originaly
designed as Model S-61 by Sikorsky for the US Navy. The aircraft had all weather capability, a good choice of weapons loads and four hours endurance.
S-61 prototype flew on 11 march 1959. The helicopter were later redesigned SH3A SeaKing. This aircraft set up one of the world speed record of 339 km/h
on 5 February 1962. SH-3A was superseded by the SH-3D, which had a 1419 shp T58-GE-10 turbine and new electronics. They have been purchased by
Brazil, Italy, Iran, and Britain. The British helicopter manufacture Westland was chosen to built the SeaKing in licence for the Royal Navy,
and thus the first SeaKing was delivered to the Royal Navy in 1967. Westland initially developed the S-61 as an anti-submarine (HAS) warfare helicopter for the UK Royal Navy.
Seaking is also operates as a search and rescue (SAR) and Airborne early warning (AEW) helicopter. The helicopter can carry four torpedoes ,two anti-ship missiles, either Sea Eagle or Exocet. Sea Eagle is an all weather, fire-and-forget, sea-skimming anti-ship missile. For anti-submarine is equipped with Sonar with an Acoustic signal processor provides the capability to carry out dipping sonar operations to a depth of 700 ft. For search and rescue will equipped with an hydraulic hoist rated at 600 lb. The cabin can accommodate up to 22 survivors. The first version of this helicopter was flown more than 40 years ago. The SeaKing has been replaced by the SH-60F SeaHawk helicopter as the anti-submarine warfare helicopter. The remaining SeaKing helicopter have been configured for logistical support and search and rescue missions. | ||
